How to Use a 70 Amp Flux Core Wire Feed Welder

  1. 70 amp arc or 90 amp flux

I am wanting to surprise my fiance and buy him a welder. He is restoring a 72 VW beetle. He will need it for floorpans and such. Which welder would be better? 90 amp Flux or 70 amp arc?

  2. Re: 70 amp arc or 90 amp flux

If he is just welding sheet metal and other thin steel then I would choose the 90A flux (if I had to choose between the 2).
I wish my wife thought about buying me tools!

    Gravel

The difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Actually, the little stick machine does look like a decent alternative.
See the post here at WeldingWeb, in the Harbor Freight Forum. He could TIG the thin stuff with an added torch:

...but If he has access to a standard Clothes Dryer outlet, this one would be a big step up from either, includes TIG torch, and has a beautiful, stable TIG arc, and will run 1/8 6010 or 1/8 6013 rods at a decent duty cycle (under $200.00 with 20% coupon which is always available online):

The 90A, but like previously said, Harbor Freight is really junk for long term use. I second getting a Hobart 140 or Lincoln PowerMig 140c model. (Not the 140T or EZ mig....). Those two models will last for years to come and they produce quality welds on sheet metal. They are perfect for auto body restoration.

  6. Re: 70 amp arc or 90 amp flux

I'd choose a 120 volt wire welder with shielding gas. If he only has 120 volt power. The little Harbor Freight stick welder I have (transformer model) is hard to start arcs unless turned up to the upper range on the amp scale. It would be a poor choice for spot welds on floor pans.

  7. Re: 70 amp arc or 90 amp flux

The wire feed welder for sure when doing sheet metal.
Flux core wire would be better than stick on sheet metal by a lot.

Best option would be to get a wire feed welder that has the ablity to use shielding gas, the shelding gas and solid wire (not flux core welding wire) works especially well for sheet metal.
Then if he wanted to weld a supporting structure or the frame he could switch to flux core wire which does better on thicker stuff.

a mig that is gas capable would be best but out of the two mentioned the 90amp flux would be the better of the two

  9. Re: 70 amp arc or 90 amp flux

Buy him a HorrorNfright $125 oxygen acetylene torch kit (suitcase, goggles, tips, regulators, striker. hoses)and rent a set of medium sized bottles from a welding supply.
That's what every motorhead should have first.
The other two items you were considering are useless junk for that.
No too nauseating for a guy building fences or chicken coops but I don't want that chitt around my vehicle. Torch brazing rod, R45 welding rod. All good and very useful.

  10. Re: 70 amp arc or 90 amp flux

Id get him a name brand 140amp mig unit and a small 125cf c25 bottle that way he can do sheetmetal and brackets and such. Plus anything name brand will hold its value pretty well so later if he wanted tto upgrade to a larger machine he can sell the unit with little lose and put the money towards future purchase.
